What is The Other Kind of Summer?
Created in Evanston, IL, The Other Kind of Summer, or TOKOS, is a way for families to enjoy the simple pleasures of summer. It is an invitation to unwind, relax, and spend time together.

How does it work?
TOKOS provides groundwork and planning for summer activities to make them happen with less effort on your part. The activities are intended for you, your spouse, and children to spend time together. And if you like, you can also enjoy them with friends. Either way, our planning allows you to focus on each other and not the work.
The activities are laid out in a guidebook, which you will receive along with weekly e-mail updates and reminders to help organize or motivate you. When you invite friends to join you in an activity, you'll have access to group hosting plans and our easy-to-use online invitation form.
While our mission is to differentiate summer from the rest of the year, it is also our intent to nurture the benefits that you gain from a slowed-down pace and to continue to foster community. Toward this end, families can look forward to Fruits of Your Leisure, a winter community service project.

How does this compare to traditional summer camps or activities I could plan myself?
TOKOS strives to restore the virtues of summer for children and adults alike. While traditional summer camps have become a lifeline for parents, filling the days of their children with activities and supervision, TOKOS assists parents during the times they're not at work, the times when they're at home with their families. In other words, traditional summer camps help you work, and TOKOS helps you play. TOKOS is a complement, not a replacement, to traditional summer camps.
As far as activities, TOKOS activities are developed primarily from personal experiences of ordinary families and individuals, and to a lesser extent, from programs of various organizations in greater Chicagoland.
And as for planning yourself, we’ve learned from experience that people have a good idea of what they can do versus what they actually do. Many people, though not all, enjoy planning and take the time to do it. If you are one who enjoys planning and does plan, then TOKOS will only enhance your experience by making you part of a community that cultivates the spirit of summer as a way to maintain balance the rest of the year. If you’re not, then TOKOS is the answer to your prayers!

Is The Other Kind of Summer for working parents only?
No. Although working parents have needs and requirements unique to them, TOKOS is open to anyone who's ever longed for that simpler place in time--the summer days of old.

How much does it cost?
The cost is $276 per family.

What are some of the activities?
Examples of activities are: Movie Night, where the featured film is the video of our recommended summer book, Dinner at the Beach, a chance to experience a favorite summer destination from a new perspective, and Scavenger Hunts, opportunities that would take you and your children to Chicago area landmarks.

Where does TOKOS meet?
This is a home-based program. The activities and events take place in your home, or at various outdoor locations (e.g. bike trail, park, etc.).
